Political Affairs Officer (P-3) in New York, United Nations
The UN’s Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) is actively seeking a Political Affairs Officer. In fact, this P-3 level role is for its Mediation Support Unit in New York. Ultimately, the officer will serve as a key coordinator for the UN’s Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors. This team, in turn, provides critical operational support for mediation and preventive diplomacy efforts worldwide.
Consequently, this position offers a unique opportunity for a seasoned mediation specialist. The officer will contribute to global peace and security. Specifically, they will monitor political developments, provide back-up to the Standby Team, and, moreover, support mediation initiatives. Their primary goal, therefore, is to prevent conflict and foster dialogue.

First and foremost, the Political Affairs Officer will be a key resource in the UN’s system-wide mediation support efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordination: The officer serves as the Coordinator for the Standby Team. This includes, for instance, managing operational support, logistics, and policy compliance for mediation efforts.
- Analysis & Reporting: The officer maintains up-to-date knowledge of political events and mediation issues. Furthermore, they collect and analyze data to identify trends. As a result, they can provide insights through reports and data visualizations.
- Technical Support: The officer provides substantive back-up to the Standby Team. In addition, they assist in fact-finding missions and preparations for high-level meetings.
- Networking: The officer maintains contacts with other UN sectors, international organizations, and governments on coordination and policy matters.

Qualifications and Experience
- Education: The role requires an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field. However, a first-level degree plus qualifying experience may be accepted.
- Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience. Specifically, this includes experience in providing mediation support and coordinating a roster of experts. Moreover, candidates need a minimum of one year of field experience in a conflict or post-conflict context.
- Languages: Candidates must be fluent in both written and spoken English. For this reason, knowledge of another UN official language is a plus.
The UN offers this full-time position for an initial one-year contract.
