The internship is located in the Research and Knowledge Production Section, Research and Trend Analysis Branch, Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). The intern will work under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the Section. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Review datasets and reports from different sources and update data and information on size estimates of people who inject drugs, living with HIV and hepatitis C. • Conduct literature reviews including scientific and grey literature on different research topics and sections related to drug use and health consequences. • Assist in validation of compiled data and information. • Assist with reference management and formatting for written outputs. • Assist in presenting the compiled data in graphs and tables. • Assist in coordination of different tasks related to the World Drug Report. • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Be computer literate in standard software applications. Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point is essential. • Degree in public health, epidemiology, sociology, political science, or a related field, with an academic focus on epidemiology of substances use or related areas of studies will be desirable. Some prior experience of research in drug use and health issue related research would be an asset. • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

The Cover Note must include: - Name of university and title of degree you are currently pursuing - Graduation date (when you expect to graduate from the programme) - A listing of IT skills and programmes that you are proficient in. - An explanation why you are the best candidate for an internship with the Drug Research Section. - An explanation of your interest in the work of UNODC. Applicants must attach to their application documentary evidence of continuing matriculation to a university degree programme in a graduate/post-graduate school during the planned period of internship (i.e. an official letter of confirmation from a university). Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
