More precisely, you’ll support vital programs at the sub-national level in the Southern Region. Kandahar, for example, will serve as your primary duty station. Ultimately, you’ll play a crucial role. You will, in effect, help safeguard the hard-won gains made by Afghan women. Furthermore, you will also ensure their continued participation in the country’s development. This vital Coordinator position in Afghanistan directly supports our mission.
About the UN Women Coordinator Role in Afghanistan
As a Sub-National Coordinator Consultant, you’ll work under the direct supervision of the WCSO Sub-Office Coordinator. In this capacity, you’ll be instrumental in supporting the Women Civil Society Organizations (WCSO) project. This project, in essence, focuses on strengthening women’s organizations across Afghanistan. Consequently, your contributions in this Coordinator role will directly bolster these vital groups.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Project Coordination & Support: Work closely with the Kabul team and the Southern Region Sub-National Coordinator. Therefore, disseminate expressions of interest. Review applications. Finalize partner budgets and agreements.
- Technical Assistance & Capacity Building: Provide crucial guidance and training to project partners. Focus on areas like core budget expenditure, project concept note drafting, and coordination with government bodies. Beyond that, strengthen their operational, organizational, and project management capabilities. Hence, you’ll build lasting capacity through this Coordinator position.
- Monitoring & Oversight: Oversee capacity assessments of partners. Monitor progress on project activities, results, and indicators. Additionally, contribute technical inputs for monitoring tools and reporting. Indeed, accurate tracking is vital for any UN Women Coordinator.
- Reporting & Knowledge Management: Provide inputs for quarterly and donor reports. Contribute to advocacy, knowledge building, communication, and event organization related to the WCSO project. In short, you’ll help share our impact.
- Operational Support: Offer overall support to the Southern Region Sub-National Coordinator. Perform other necessary tasks as assigned. Certainly, flexibility is key in this role.

Qualifications for a UN Women Coordinator in Afghanistan
- Education: Completion of high school education is required. A Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, human rights, gender/women’s studies, international development, or a related field is a strong asset.
- Experience: You need a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience. This includes, but is not limited to, development program/project implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation, and capacity building. Experience in civil society and with women’s issues is an asset. Experience with the United Nations System is desirable, especially for a Coordinator role like this one.
- Languages: Fluency in Dari and Pashto is essential. A working knowledge of English is also required.
- Travel: This is a home-based consultancy. However, as a UN Women Coordinator Afghanistan, you must be able to travel to partner organizations in the Southern Region as needed. Moreover, expect to attend trainings and meetings in Kabul.
